1. Magnification: Match the Scope to the Job
Magnification is the first decision, and it should come from your use case, not a number on a box.

2. Glass Quality: ED Prime Is the Differentiator
At high magnification, glass quality is everything. Look for:
- ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass — minimizes color fringing (chromatic aberration), keeps edges sharp at 16x, 25x, 35x
- Fully multi-coated lenses — maximize light transmission, critical in dawn/dusk light
- Large, bright exit pupil — comfortable eye box and bright image across the zoom range
Premium ED glass is where a $200 scope and an $800 scope diverge in real use. If your budget only stretches to one premium feature, make it the glass.
3. Reticle: Mil vs. MOA — Pick One and Learn It
The reticle is your aiming language. Two main families:
- Mil (milliradian) — metric-based, 10 mils per 100 yards ≈ 1 mil = 3.6" at 100 yards; preferred for long-range and competition
